What is
Graphanim?
Graphanim is a non-photorealistic rendering tool that will
launch a new type of aesthetic in the animation field. Providing a watercolor appearance
to animated featured films, it should promote the heritage of comic book colors,
and bring together watercolor graphics and 3D animation. |

Features
Non-homogeneity of the colors on a large
surface
Watercolor paintings use characteristic, very thinned down pigments, which causes
a non homogeneous distribution of colors on large tint areas. Graphanim simulates
this attribute and produces the watercolor random marbled look.
The intensity of the Graphanim watercolor
marbled look is adjustable.
The watercolor marbled look exhibits also a characteristic granulation
size. With Graphanim effect size is modifiable.
Brush strokes for rendering the shadows
and the relief
In watercolor painting, shadows are depicted by brush strokes with
a darker tone than the original one or an accumulation of successive pigment layers.
Watercolor characteristic paint grain
The watercolor pigments are not entirely dissolved in water, which
results in a characteristic texture with a high frequency of small color points
in tint areas. This effect comes together with the non-homogeneity of the colors
which has a low frequency.
As the watercolor marbeld look, the intensity of the Graphanim
watercolor paint pigments is adjustable.
The same for the pigment granulation size. |
Paper grain
Depending on the paper used for painting, the paper grain may be
visible on the final image. Indeed, pigments mainly tend to settle in the paper
holes.
Homogeneous watercolor effects size in
2D frame
Graphanim features an innovative effect algorithm
which enables to maintain homogeneous granulation sizes of marbled effects and pigments
through all the 2D rendered frames of an animation. Effect visible sizes are then,
independent of depth and camera movement. |
Adjustable wobbling effect
Watercolor paintings exhibit pigment flowing
effects on the border of the tint areas. Graphanim enables to add a great looking,
frame to frame coherent wobbling effect to rendered images. It wipes out the "too
perfect" look of 3D scenes where object borders seem too straight to be real. |
Edge darkening
In watercolor paintings, pigments migrate
toward the borders of the tint areas, due to water flows on the paper. Graphanim
features an adjustable edge darkening process to render those migration effects. |
